Pygmy Boa

Barry is always into new and different things and here he is rooting around trying to find a Pygmy Boa.

Barry is always into new and different things and here he is rooting around trying to find a Pygmy Boa.

We now have a bin that we created for our compost worms filled with moistened shredded paper which we feed every three days or so with scraps of fruit, vegetables, egg shells and coffee grounds. So when Barry found a Pygmy Boa in our wash house at Harbour Club Villas last night, he popped it in with the worms. I wanted to take photos in the day light so we had to find a temporary home for it.

Here's some of the worms and in about another four months, we should be able to harvest the finished compost.

This Pygmy or Dwarf Boa is about 12 inches long which is about the size that they grow to here in the islands.

These snakes are non poisonous and harmless. They have a yellow or orange tailtip which serves as a lure to their prey and also apparently the colour may discourage predators.

Barry holds the Pygmy Boa in his hand and you can see the yellowish tail.

The Turks and Caicos Dwarf or Pygmy boa is endemic to these islands meaning that this snake is only found in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Maybe it was the light, but the Pygmy Boa's head showed a blue tinge and it had beautiful markings.

Our island snakes are at risk and are preyed upon by cats, dogs and rats. In the past, Barry has shown boas we’ve found to several of our local friends and visitors to Harbour Club so that they can see how harmless these snakes really are. Next time you are fortunate enough to see one, remember that they need our protection in order to survive here in the Turks and Caicos.

We must try to keep these beautiful creatures from becoming extinct.

Lignum Vitae….Tree of Life

The beautiful Lignum Vitae is found throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands

The beautiful Lignum Vitae is found throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands

The other day I noticed a Lignum Vitae just loaded with bright yellow-orange fruits. The fruits are capsule shaped and they split open in September and October to expose black seeds that are enclosed in a fleshy red pulp.

Lignum Vitae translated from Latin means "tree of life" and was used in folk medicine as well as being prized by carpenters.

Lignum Vitae translated from Latin means "tree of life" and was used in folk medicine as well as being prized by carpenters.

Commonly called ironwood, the wood is so dense that it will not float even in seawater. Lignum Vitae is the heaviest and densest wood in the world and will rapidly sink to the bottom when placed in water. It resists rot caused by insects and moisture that lignum vitae wood used as posts for dwellings by Taino Indians have been found. Loyalist settlers also harvested valuable hardwoods from the Caicos bush and exported them to Europe.

When the lignum flowers, the whole tree is laden with beautiful blue-violet blossoms.

The resin has been used for many years, in the treatment of arthritis and other ailments. At one stage it was thought to work both a contraceptive and a treatment for syphilis. Teas have been prepared from various parts of the tree and have been used to treat boils, swollen glands, fevers, aches and pains.

What an amazing tree…………even the insects and nectar drinking birds love the nectar of the Lignum Vitae.

Brown Pelicans

Late afternoon and two pelicans perfectly synchronized take to the air

What a magnificent sight as two brown pelicans take flight over the calm seas. The late afternoon formed a pastel palette with rose tinted shades of colour. It was a ballet dance duet as these beautiful birds hovered over the water slowly gaining enough lift to soar off into the skies.

I love the gentle feel of this photo and hope you enjoy it too.

Baby Hummingbirds at Harbour Club Villas

I looked up and straight ahead and saw a small hummingbird nest with two beaks sticking up in the air.

I looked up and straight ahead and saw a small hummingbird nest with two beaks sticking up in the air.

I was taking in the laundry today and all of a sudden I heard the humming of a hummingbird………..Barry had told me that he had seen one frequently out back of our cabin. I looked up searching for the tiny bird and to my surprise, I looked directly at a nest that was in our Poui tree. I could see two little beaks pointing straight up in the air.

The two baby hummingbirds were snuggled side by side in the nest.

The two baby hummingbirds were snuggled side by side in the nest.

The nest is made out of soft materials like moss and lichen, cotton fluffs, soft plant pieces, dryer lint, and leaf hairs. Items are brought back to the nest a little at a time and glued together with spider webs……..there’s loads of those here at Harbour Club!

I wanted you to see how this nest is cradled in a tri-fork of a Poui tree.

I wanted you to see how this nest is cradled in a tri-fork of a Poui tree.

The Mama hummingbird looks for a place that is well off the ground to prevent predators such as ants, snakes, and predatory birds finding the nest. It must also be sheltered from wind and the heat of the sun during the main part of the day. She found a really good solid base in our Poui tree where three branches had grown from a knot.

The two baby hummingbirds are so sweet and almost look like they are getting too big to fit both of them together.

I’m thinking these two little ones will be flying the nest pretty soon as they seem to be really squished in there together.

A beautiful twosome.........I'm hoping if I watch close enough, I'll see them trying to fly really soon.

And so, I’ll be watching the babies and hoping to get a few photos as they learn to fly. The positioning of the tree and the nest may make it difficult as I don’t want to scare them. We’ll see………hope you enjoy these photos.

Lobster Hunt

An abundance of Lobster as we headed out late this afternoon to catch them

An abundance of Lobster as we headed out late this afternoon to find some lobster.

A late afternoon, spur of the moment decision had us heading out to find some lobster for Pete’s last night on island before he leaves tomorrow for Kentucky. I wish we could say that we actually caught them ourselves!!!  No such luck as we motored off towards Five Cays and the fish plant knowing we could hail some boats and get some lobster the lazy man’s way. We whistled to a local fishing boat and they had a few lobsters on board.

We managed to hail a small local fishing boat.

As the fishing boat drew near, we could see that their catch for the day was not huge. In past years the boats would be filled……………over harvested perhaps???

Do you think anyone will believe Barry when he tells them he dove and caught several lobsters?

Once we had bargained over the price for the lobsters, we stopped at Bay Cay for refreshments. It’s hard work negotiating you know!!!

Sunday Beach Day

Barry deserves top billing as he "frolics" in the water with an ever present Coors Lite!!!

We motored out from our Marina channel to a small sliver of white powdery sand beach for a few hours Sunday afternoon

It was pretty windy and the ocean was rough last Sunday but we thought it would be fine. It was a bumpy ride over the white caps so much so that I was literally gripping onto the hand rail. Luckily we were protected from the wind and things calmed down as we approached and moored at a little beach.

As I explored the island, the others stayed on the boat and slowly made ready to enjoy the water.

I was thrilled to see several Rock Iguanas and I could hear the rustling of many others as they made their escapes before I could spot them.

The Turks and Caicos Rock Iguana was re-introduced to several of the many little Cays. It is an endangered species of lizard and is endemic to the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The waves were pounding on the far side of the island and I was fascinated by the large rock formation with a hole in it.

We enjoyed the sun, sand and beach and of course we had it all to our selves. Even the iguanas didn't mind sharing this little spot of paradise.

Anole Lizards

Face off as two Anole Lizards prepare to do battle

I came out onto our deck today at Harbour Club to find some Anole Lizards sizing each other up as they prepared to defend their territory. I have never seen them quite this aggressive towards one another but I know that they are very territorial.

They were sizing each other up, would make preliminary lunges for the heads

A number of times these two disengaged and I expected one of them to turn tail but not this pair

We find so many Anoles and Curly Tailed lizards on the grounds of Harbour Club Villas and Marina. Some are now getting quite big especially the Curly Tailed lizards. Hope you enjoyed these photos and I will look for some good ones of the Curly Tails for another post.

Our own private beach

A delightful afternoon spent at a little beach close by where we took Malaika for some swimming

The water was so clear yesterday with sun reflections dancing and creating silvery patterns as we just played in the water. Malaika just loved being buoyant in the foot deep waters of the south side of Provo. She’s beginning to kick her legs and is totally unafraid of the water.

Malaika had such fun kicking her little feet and splashing in the water

We took a little break and close to the shore where we were sitting in the water, we were joined by some tiny little fish. Malaika was delighted but stayed close to Mom.
