Sand Bubbler Crab

Look down and see the amazing art works at your feet

This fascinates me and I’m always looking down as I stroll along our Provo beaches. You’ll see those intricate balls of sand that form some wondrous patterns in the sand. I finally had to look this up and found out that it is all the works of a small crab……the Sand Bubbler Crab.

Sand bubbles created by the Sand Bubbler Crab

At low tide, the sand bubbler crabs emerge from their holes beneath the sand to gather microscopic food that the tide has brought in. They do this by collecting and sifting the sand, actually checking each grain, and rolling those parts that have nothing useful for them into little balls (sand bubbles) that they toss behind.

A little crab emerges from its burrow in the sand at low tide to search for food.

Sand bubbler crabs live in burrows in the sand, where they remain during high tide. When the tide is out, they come out on to the surface of the sand, and scour the sand for food, forming it into inflated pellets, which cover the sand and form some great designs.

Kinda looks like a palm tree to me!

Next time you are wandering on one of our beautiful beaches, take a look and see some of these intricate designs in the sand. A sand bubbler crab artist will be hiding near by just too shy to come out and take a bow!

A simply stellar performance………I’m stunned at the depth of talent on display this evening at the first night performance of The Little Caribbean Mermaid and the Enchanted Ring. I’m not sure what I expected exactly but it was the most entertaining, fun filled evening full of laughter, comedy, to the point “in-jokes” about PPC, Lime and even JoJo the dolphin was part of the act.

Widow Bling (Asa from Caicos Adventures fame) was hilarious decked out in all "her" finery

Benjamin (Michael Burchill) and Lucky (Ian Arthur)explore under the sea searching for the ring and meet the beautiful Isabella (Alison Capron) and her best friend Queen Lareefah (Cora Malcolm) the Queen Angelfish.

Mermaid Isabella captivated not only the audience but Benjamin too

Spectacular underwater sets, superb costumes and all the characters in the production kept the audience enthralled as they were drawn into participating in the performance. Shouts of laughter as the audience screamed “Behind you, Behind you” as the infamous Lionfish (Mervin Forbes) put in an appearance.

Salt (Matthew Williams) and Peppa (Bernard Rodriguens) the two bumbling secret agents made the audience laugh at their antics as the story unfolded.

Shopping Turks and Caicos

Our shopping trip was pleasantly interrupted by two beautiful little girls who posed for me by the great mural at Ports of Call

Our shopping trip was pleasantly interrupted by two beautiful little girls who posed for me by the great mural at Ports of Call

Today was the day I took Sam and Marilyn shopping as we visited my favourite stores with such a variety of gifts just made for everyone. We stopped at the colourful Haitien market with stalls full of metal painted art. It was a day of turtles as Sam bought a turtle wall piece and then Marilyn found a beautiful turtle box in another shop.

Hard to pass up all the vibrant colours of metal art work......from geckos to fish, turtles to sunmasks

Ports of Call was another stop where we made sure to drop in at Mama’s Gift Shop….Mama wasn’t there today but Chalice as always was full of smiles and happy to see us. On your next Provo visit, tell the ladies Marta at Harbour Club sent you! Sam, whose real name is Sandy bought the new children’s book Where is Simon, Sandy? for her grandkids. It is based on an actual event from the Turks and Caicos Islands and is set on Grand Turk.

Check out the great selection at our shopping areas in The Salt Mills and Ports of Call

The SaltMills is full of quality shops especially Anna’s Gallery which is a must with the most exquisite original paintings on silk. You’ll often find the artist, Anna Bourne painting her latest silk work of tropical fish, turtles, frogs or sea horses. Other artists’ works are also on display.

Happy shopping everyone!
