Fish Fry on Provo

Excitement builds as the Junkanoo band dances through and with the crowds

A great evening was had at the Island Fish Fry held every Thursday night at the Children’s Park in the Bight. Local restaurants served up the most delicious fry and grilled fish, peas and rice, macaroni, lobster and conch and fresh corn. It was my first taste of “gullywash”…….. I took a small sample and just had to fill the glass up to the brim it was that good. Oh yes…..for those of you like me that don’t know what gullywash is, it’s a drink usually served in a coconut not a glass so rum and coconut milk are the main ingredients. Visitors and locals were all treated to some of the best island entertainment.

Colourful costumes, noise makers and shakers as everyone gets dancing.

Uncle Dough’s has the best #1 conch salad and the most delicious “gullywash”!!!

David Bowen often will emcee, sing, dance and play harmonica with local Rake and Scrape Bands.

Dancers getting ready to perform.

Henry the Conch was dancing and greeting people at the Fish Fry.

Henry the Conch was a real hit with everyone as he stopped for many photo opportunities with visitors and local kids. We were treated to some folk story telling and skits, the maypole plaiting and a junkanoo rush by “We Funk.”

The young dancers braided the Maypole as the crowds watched and cheered.

Everyone joined in and danced to We Funk Junkanoo band.

These drummers were sensational.

How low can you go?

This youngster was wearing several hats as he blew his whistle.

Here’s the young lady who had be up dancing with everyone and to the Junkanoo band.

Please remember that the Fish Fry is being held every Thursday down at the Children’s Park in the Bight. Bring the kids and head down for a few hours of fun, entertainment and the most delicious fry fish! See you there.

Fool’s Regatta 2013

Picos ready and waiting to start the racing at the Fool's Regatta on Saturday.

The 2013 Fool’s Regatta at the Children’s Park in the Bight was held on Saturday. Saturday was as perfect as perfect gets even though it had a dubious and a bit ominous start weather wise. I arrived at about 1 pm in the afternoon and the kids races were underway. Tents were set up selling drinks and burgers, the water was warm and inviting (yeah for summer time when I can actually get into the water). Yes, I know what you are thinking but when you live on Provo, you tend to be pretty selective water warmth wise before swimming. Here’s some of the photos from the day.

The colourful Beluga was showing off for the crowds watching the racing.

The kids of the Provo Sailing Club were having a blast sailing and competing on the Picos

The kids (little and one big) were happily playing and building castles in the sand.

These two little seven year olds were away to the races.

Lil' Tinkerbell was sporting her pink bikini.......she's a potcake rescue chihuahua that's found her forever home.

Big boats and Caicos Sloops were also racing just off shore.

The talented youngsters of Provo Primary Steel Band entertained the crowds.

Most of the kids learn to sail with the Provo Sailing Club.

Wishing he could be out there sailing!

Every June the Fool’s Regatta gets underway so come down to the beach the next time you are here and especially during Regatta time.

Happy Sailing!!

Island Fish Fry and Miss TCI Universe

Miss Salt Cay ready to compete in the Miss TCI Universe competition this weekend.

Great excitement this evening at the Island Fish Fry as everyone prepares to cheer on all six beauties vying for the Miss TCI Universe 2013-2014 crown. This has to be the largest crowd yet ….. a mix of visitors and locals enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of delicious fry fish, peas and rice, conch fritters, fish fingers, jerk chicken served up by many of the island’s great local restaurants. It was a chance for the six beautiful young ladies to strut their stuff infront of an enthusiastic crowd. Lively entertainment, a rake and scrape band and a Junkanoo rush by We Funk. Here’s some photos of this great event and don’t forget if you are visiting, come on down to the Children’s Park in the Bight on Thursdays.

Conch Festival

The annual conch festival in Blue Hills was a hit with young and old..what a fun time.

Here’s a selection of my photos taken at the 9th Annual conch Festival held in Blue Hills over the weekend. Unfortunately due to an afternoon check in, we were late getting down there but managed to see both the conch blowing as well as  the  conch “knocking” competitions. Cash prizes were awarded to the person blowing a conch for the longest time and for the most conch “knocked” in a limited time. Drinks were flowing freely, all kinds of food available, conch dishes of all kinds and of course, the main event

This lady blew a mean conch!

And our captivating emcee for the conch-etition was David Bowen

Winner of the conch blowing competition

And the winner is.........................

No stopping this young gal from dancing the night away.

Competitors "knocking" conch in a limited time frame.

Lookin' cool........love your glasses.

And the winner and Grand Champion is..........The Bay Bistro.

And one of the highlights of the evening was We Funk, the Junkanoo band. Everyone was dancing as the band swept them along with bells and whistles, drums and horns. Wow, this was the part of the festivities that I wait for and enjoy the most.

Colourful costumes.

Spectacular end to a wonderful Conch day with We Funk

Dancing in the street at the conch festival in Blue Hills

What a fun day or at least for us, a few hours. We’ll be there next year so if you’re looking to vacation in November, find out the dates for the Conch Festival.

See you in Blue Hills.

Fools Regatta 2012

The kids on their Pico's are dwarfed by the fast sailing Minx as she heads out racing to Pine Cay and back.

The first Fools Regatta was held in 1990 and the Minx was part of that first race so many years ago along with the Beluga. This year’s event brought out crowds of people even though the weather was cloudy and a tropical storm made for an exciting day in more ways than one. This year the sailing club introduced the kids to 12 Laser Picos and these have been ideal for training the islands’ younger sailors.

The Caicos Sloops were all in competition for the Tom Lightbourne trophy

These three little sisters were having a blast playing in the water.

Even some of our four legged friends got in on the water fun

Provo Primary Steel Band provided some lively music...those kids are amazing!

Winners in the Caicos Sloop A Class category.....Congratulations!

Capt. Tim of the Beluga wins the Bent Prop award for his mad, heart pounding, wind forced dash towards the beach!

Another Regatta is over and this one will be remembered for it’s hurricane like abrupt end. Nonetheless, we all had a great time. Lots of sailing and racing, fun, laughter and seeing and enjoying friends. Well done everyone and the volunteer effort always amazes me. You are all stars in my book!

SEE YOU NEXT YEAR.

Maskanoo 2011

Love the unique masks at Maskanoo tonight at Grace Bay

What a fabulous evening down on Grace Bay where the hugely anticipated 2nd annual Maskanoo was held. We thoroughly enjoyed the music and great island entertainment, kids and adults of all ages with and without masks, food and even face painting for the kids. Grace Bay Road was lined with vendors selling local food, drinks, arts and crafts and everyone turned out for all the fun and excitement.

Diamond plays the ripsaw

There were adults and kids, tourists and residents chatting or walking, many dancing and having a great time as they enjoyed traditional ripsaw music played by the Island Boys and then we all listened to the awesome voice of Turks and Caicos’ own Barbara Johnson.

What a cutie...love those big eyes.

David Bowen, Cultural Director jumped, danced and blew his whistle as he led the Maskanoo parade along Grace Bay Road.

The most amazing and sensational Maskanoo hat mask that I've every seen!

These youngsters were having such a fun time

Even little babes were taking in the festivities
